Lorenzo’s Home takes care of abandoned HIV positive orphans aged from 18 months to 10 years. The children arrive from the eastern and middle regions of Thailand. They are brought to the Sisters by Social Welfare and local Hospitals. The children often arrive very ill and require special care.
The centre opened in 2001 on land donated to The Camillian Sisters in 1996. It is located 60 to 90 minutes drive from central Bangkok depending on traffic.
The centre provides holistic care for the children providing accommodation, medical care, education and love. The project engages with the local community. Educating the community about the facts surrounding HIV and motivating them to become involved.
The Sisters have created a wonderful family atmosphere for the children and provide a Mother figure they never knew. The Sisters seem to have as much fun as the children and their passion to help the children shines through.
The children stay at the centre until they are 10 years of age. At this time the girls are supported at an Outreach House operated by the Sisters and the boys are moved to a Canadian Foundation who also care for HIV positive youth.
One of the sisters is a qualified Nurse and the local hospital is only 400 metres away. Good medical care is always close at hand. The children receive their medicine daily at 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The smaller children are given syrup according to their weight and the older children tablets. The current drugs used to treat HIV are very effective. Children are informed of their HIV status around the age of six and the illness explained to the children in simple terms. The Sisters do not convert the children who are predominantly Buddhist.
Visitors are welcome Saturday or Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. During the week is not possible as the children leave for school at 7:00 a.m. and do not return until 4:30 p.m. On arriving home they must wash and prepare for dinner. Due the projects remote location it is recommended travelling with a licenced tour operator. Destination Asia can offer transport and guide to the project from central Bangkok hotels for THB1900- for half day. Any other stops or extensions must be re-quoted. Please book at least 4 weeks prior to the requested date by contacting us at [email protected] In the instance of late bookings, transport may not be available especially in high season.
