The Australia Cambodia Foundation Inc.  took over the operations of the original orphanage in September 2004.  At this time the children were living in appalling conditions.  There was no clean drinking water, open sewers, diseased dogs roaming around, squatter families living in slums on site, poor education, diet and hygiene.  Many of the children suffered health issues some serious.

Now the site cannot be recognized from those early times.  The children have clean drinking water, good food and hygiene, renovated buildings, state of the art computer school, access to the Australian Centre Of Education in addition to Government School, Music and Dance classes, playground and volleyball court and mostly importantly management who care.  As Founder Geraldine Cox AM stated “Now when the children arrive home with report cards in hand there is someone who actually cares about their report and grades”.  Many of the children were previously trafficked, suffered physical or mental abuse and arrived very truamatised.  To help the children move forward Sunrise has their own team of dedicated counselors and trained staff to deal with such issues.  Where possible children are assisted to be reintegrated with family or extended family.

Visiting hours are from Monday to Friday at 9.00 am or 3.00 pm and Saturdays at 9.00 am only.  The centre is closed to visitors on Sundays.

LOCATION

Sunrise Angkor is situated close to the town centre of Siem Reap. It is on Sivatha Street midway between the Old Market and the Crocodile Farm. Go South from the Old Market keeping the river on your left hand side and Sunrise Angkor is on the right hand side of the road approximately 300 metres from the Old Market. It is next door to the Chea Sim Primary School. Look for the green and gold iron fence. The orphanage is located right in the heart of Siem Reap. Most hotels only a couple of minutes drive away by taxi or tut tut. For directions please ask Rob Madsen or Keo Phalla for guidance.
